The sound of the electric heater humming away takes a large percentage of my soundscape and is continuously interrupted by the sound of a car zooming down the road. From my right, I hear the sound of a smaller car rolling up the hill followed by the sound of a much larger vehicle and a muffled phone conversation coming from the other side of my bedroom wall. All this while feeling the taps of my fingers pushing down on my keyboard with a satisfying mechanical sound.
I have just finished reading a chapter of Rick Rubin’s book “The Creative Act” in which he describes his presence using the soundscape. I in turn have done the same in my opening paragraph and in doing so I felt present. The takeaway for me was I also felt present oddly when reading about his description. THAT is what I want to do with an item of clothing. How can I induce it in others?
Well, maybe some simple text could help.
Text Idea:
“How Many Colours Can You See Right Now?”
“Can You Feel The Sensation Of Your Clothes On You Right Now?”
Why did this idea pop into my mind? If you have lived in London and been part of the sardine can that is the 9-5 community on the tube I would ask you to look at the faces of our fellow humans. I see way too many depressed, sad, or miserable faces on that journey, to the point where I have felt odd when coming in with a cheery mood. One instance that stood out to me a lot was seeing a lady holding back her tears for the whole journey home. I felt she wanted to be left alone with her eyes stuck to the ground, occasionally looking up to check the stop we were at. I have no idea what she experienced that day, maybe she hated her job and it was taking its toll (probably me projecting that idea onto her because I have been there), or something completely different.
So the point of the message on the clothing is. Clothing can be used as a walking billboard. Why not have a message that can help people deal with their psychological pain? Putting a human into a better head space can help them deal with their real-life problems, give them agency, and maybe come up with a solution that would not have popped into our crazy brains of ours with the presence state of mind.
DM me your soundscape—no context needed. I would love to help you out with a little presence practice and read about what you are hearing.
